We have already enjoyed one royal wedding this year but there are two more still to come before the end of 2018, and one, in particular, will be a major milestone. It has been a month since the world watched on as Prince Harry and Megan Markle tied the knot in what was the most significant wedding in the British royal family for seven years. The last of its kind was, of course, when Harry’s older brother, Prince William married Kate Middleton. Harry and Megan’s marriage won’t be the only royal nuptials that happen in 2018, however.
On October 12, 2018, Princess Eugenie, one of the Queen’s four granddaughters, will marry Jack Brooksbank. As wonderful a day as that will undoubtedly be, there’s a third and final royal wedding taking place later this year with some historical significance. The Queen’s cousin, Lord Ivar Mountbatten will marry his longtime partner, James Coyle.
The marriage of Lord Mountbatten and his partner James Coyle will mark the first-ever same-sex marriage in the royal family’s history. As historic a moment as it will be in British royal history, it will not be the extravagant affair that Harry and Megan’s wedding was in May. Mountbatten told the Daily Mail that “the ceremony itself will be very small” and only close family and friends will be in attendance.
Lord Mountbatten has actually been married before to his ex-wife Penny who, in a rather sweet turn of events, will be walking him down the aisle for his second wedding. The two of them have three daughters together who are apparently very excited about the upcoming marriage. Mountbatten admitted that the wedding is for James though, “I’m pushing it because I think it’s important for him. James hasn’t had the stable life I have. I want to be able to give you that.”
There is often a stigma that surrounds the British royal family. That in the present day it has no real purpose, is merely a tourist attraction, and that certain members of it can be rather traditionalist and stuck in the past. The upcoming marriage is a little proof that isn’t necessarily the case, and perhaps in the coming generations, royal family members more closely related to the king or queen than cousin will be a part of same-sex marriages.
