The ongoing trend is to adopt an organic lifestyle: from the food we put on the table to the bed on which we sleep night after night. Being as close to natural as possible is not always an easy or affordable quest, because organic materials are, in fact, more expensive to produce than the ones with cheap toxic components and lots of chemicals. So the question “is it worth it” to choose organic only, even though such goal may be difficult to achieve, seems entirely legitimate.
Going green can be a bit touch-and-go when it comes to mattresses. There are several brands advertising as organic, but sometimes you can find some potentially toxic components even in such products.
In fact, what does organic mean when it comes to mattresses?
The answer is products which are manufactured by mixing natural and non-toxic materials, such as organic wool, organic cotton, and organic latex. These materials have to present a guaranteed non-toxic interference: no dangerous chemicals involved in the growing process; exclusively mechanical mechanism used in processing them and no addition of any poisonous substances in the mattress manufacturing process.
Based on that definition, I have discovered that the Avocado mattresses are entirely organic: they are constructed with eco-friendly materials – natural latex, spring coils from recycled steel cotton and wool. An unbiased review of Avocado by Mattress Matchers was a big help for me when researching for useful information about the features and benefits of these products. It made it easier for me to put together a short guide with pros and cons, to answer my initial question – should I buy an organic mattress?
So here’s what you should know if you consider purchasing an organic Avocado mattress:
- It is a truly eco-friendly, biodegradable product.
- It has no VOC chemicals (Volatile Organic Compounds), and you can’t smell any odor when unboxing it.
- It’s perfect for children and adults as well.
- It offers excellent support and spine alignment.
- No matter which is your favorite sleeping position, this mattress is suitable for all styles.
- The breathable materials from which it is made (especially the cotton) will keep you cool overnight.
- The spring coils allow the necessary airflow.
- The wool is an excellent moist absorbent.
- It offers plenty of bounce, but not much sink.
- The surface is firm (which may be not so great for those who prefer a different level of firmness).
- It is a durable and resistant product, with a reduced environmental impact.
- Avocado offers a sleep trial period (one trial per household), which is essential for anyone to decide if this particular type of mattress is what they need.
- It is made of natural, hypoallergenic materials which give it a natural dust mite and anti-microbial resistance.
- It presents non-toxic fire barrier methods.
Naturally, I found some “cons” to take into consideration:
- The edge support is not as strong as in the case of traditional foam mattresses.
- If you’re the type who enjoys the sinking sensation, you’re in for a disappointment.
- The general impression is that the mattress is not entirely noiseless.
- One particular problem seems to be the limited availability: you can buy it online, but not just from anywhere.
- You don’t have too many options (which is a good thing, from my point of view).
- It comes at a high price, which makes it unaffordable for most people.
As far as I am concerned, the non-toxic Avocado mattress would make a fantastic long-term investment in our comfort and health. So I’d say yes, it would be worth it to put my money in it and encourage others to choose wisely as well.
