The President of African Development Bank (AfDB), and former Minister of Agriculture Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, has been named the 2017 World Food Prize Laureate. Amb. Kenneth Quinn, the President, The World Food Prize, The Hall of Laureates, made the announcement at a ceremony held at the US department of agriculture, which was attended by US secretary of agriculture Sonny Perdue. Quinn said the nominations for the prize were submitted by organisations and prestigious individuals, adding that a Selection Committee, made of individuals from around the world, made the final decision.

Since its founding in 1986, the Prize has honoured 45 individuals for their outstanding contributions to food security around the world and Adesina, whose name was selected on Monday in Washington, D.C, will become the 46th recipient of the prestigious award and the sixth African to be honoured. The prestigious 250,000 dollars prize known as the “Nobel Prize’’ for Food and Agriculture, is given annually to a person who has worked to advance human development by “improving the quality, quantity or availability of food in the world.
Adesina who was the Nigeria Minister of Agriculture under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan will be presented with the award at the award ceremony scheduled for Oct. 19, 2017. The President of the Foundation, Kenneth Quinn, said Nigeria’s former Minister of Agriculture on the 2017 World Food Prize for the following reasons:
- He grew up in poverty himself” and embarked on a journey to use his academic training to “lift up millions of people out of poverty, especially farmers in rural Africa”.
