Mayweather Versus McGregor fight? Recently, online reports speculated about the possibility of a match between retired boxing champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor. Sometimes dubbed “Pretty Boy” by fans because he emerged from a stellar career in the ring virtually untouched by blows to his face, Floyd Mayweather became a boxing promoter after his retirement in 2015. Some boxing fans still hope they can see him box again in the future.
His prowess as an athlete became almost legendary.
Conor McGregor, an acclaimed UFC Champion from Ireland, has made his interest in boxing against the retired American in exchange for $100 million well known to the media. On November 16, 2016, the California State Athletic Commission reportedly issued him a boxing license. If Floyd Mayweather did decide to come out of retirement and return to the ring once again, who might he fight (if not Conor McGregor)?
Manny Pacquiao?
If ever Floyd Mayweather decided to return to the ring, Manny Pacquiao might seem a logical contender against him. These two are considered the best of their generation, have already fought in front of a huge pay-per-view audience at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 2, 2015, with Mayweather prevailing in a unanimous decision.
Although Manny Pacquiao won back the WBO welterweight title after Floyd Mayweather, Jr. vacated it (upon retirement) during a fight against Timothy Bradley in 2016, he has yet to defeat Floyd Mayweather, Jr.. Despite his interest in many other activities, including working in government and in films, Manny Pacquiao reportedly recently expressed his willingness to fight Conor McGregor if Floyd Mayweather declines the MMA fighter’s offer to venture out of retirement. Perhaps he would welcome a rematch with the American boxer? Now 39, Manny Pacquiao appears more closely matched in age to Floyd Mayweather than 28-year old Conor McGregor.
Other Possible Contenders
Probably many talented boxers would appreciate the chance to spar with Floyd Mayweather, Jr. if he should ever decide to leave a successful retirement and return to the ring. Some of the skilled fighters who might merit that privilege include 33-year old Andre Berto, who lost decisively to “Pretty Boy” during a fight in 2015. Perhaps he would consider a rematch?
Even the talented Light Middleweight Super Champion, Cuban boxer Erislandy Lara Santoya, aged 33, might offer a strong challenge to the American champion in the ring today (although his weight classification might prevent that situation from occurring). He did fight and TKO the Slovenian Jan Zaveck in 2015 in a match in Florida. (As a welterweight, Jan Zaveck had contended against Andre Berto in 2011). Boxer weight categories sometimes change over the course of time.
Many Honors
Regardless of whether or not retired champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr. ever decides to return to the ring, he has certainly won the highest possible accolades as a boxer. His fights inspired legions of fans around the globe. His appearance in the ring against any challenger would likely attract a large pay-per-view audience.
